WOW Protein Donut

Many years ago, before there were so many protein snacks on the market, I remember seeing a company called “Jim Buddy” selling protein donuts in the UK.

I was incredibly jealous because, at the time, we didn’t really have options like that in the US. Sure, we had some protein cookies, but that was pretty much the extent of the protein baked goods out there.

Fast forward to today, and Jim Buddy now sells their donuts in the United States as “Wow! Protein Donuts.”

I had no idea what to expect with these protein donuts, but I was really excited to finally get to try them.

Nutritionally speaking, these donuts are awesome. With only 130 calories, it’s one of the lower-calorie protein snacks you’ll see (on par with Built Bar), and it has a fair amount of protein with 11 grams.

When I opened up the package, the first thing I noticed was the lack of frosting.

The photo on the package doesn’t technically show any frosting, but it is toasted up in a way that makes it look much more like a regular donut.

Giving this donut the smell test, I was expecting (and hoping) for something resembling cake batter, but all I could smell were chemicals.

I’m not able to pinpoint the exact smell because it’s not an artificial sweetener smell, just like inedible chemicals.

But hey, sometimes food doesn’t pass the smell test. The taste test is ultimately the most important…

WoW Protein Donut

Biting into this donut is not like biting into a fresh-baked donut. It’s much more similar to biting into a protein donut you tried to make at home that is far too dry and has been sitting out for a few days.

It is overall very dry and spongy, which is not what I want in a donut.

The fact that it is so low in calories made me really want to enjoy this protein donut, but the flavor also fell incredibly short.

That chemical smell directly translated into a chemical taste, and it is a very strange & unpleasant experience overall.

I typically finish snacks that I review, because I hate wasting food (especially when it’s expensive) but I couldn’t bring myself to finish this donut.

WOW Cake Batter Donut

I’ve made protein donuts at home before, and this reminds me of a failed attempt I’ve had before. If you’ve ever tried baking with protein powder, then you know how easily something can dry out. That seems to be the case here.

I’m really hoping that I either got a bad batch or that the chocolate flavor is significantly better, but as it stands now, these protein donuts are definitely not for me.

Summary
I'm hoping the donut I tried is a fluke and I just got a bad draw, but I cannot recommend these protein donuts. There are far better options for protein snacks out there.
