Protein Sweet Roll

Legendary Foods has won me over before with their Tasty Pastries, a high-protein spin on our beloved Pop-Tarts.

To be perfectly honest, I hated them when I first tried them but came to realize they were actually extremely impressive when I gave them a second chance.

So, when I found out that Legendary Foods also makes Protein Sweet Rolls, I had high hopes.

We’re talking about a product from the same company that managed to make keto-friendly Pop-Tarts that pack a ridiculous 20g of protein, so the bar is set pretty high.

The Protein Sweet Rolls are, as you’d guess, high-protein cinnamon roll knock-offs. My local store only had chocolate, which was a bit disappointing. I mean, I’ve never turned down a chocolate treat, but we can all agree that cinnamon rolls are the gold standard when it comes to sweet rolls, right?

Protein Sweet Roll Macros

The macro lineup here is impressive, which we come to expect from Legendary Foods – 220 calories, 12g fat, 24g carbs (net 5g for the keto folks), and a whopping 20g of protein.

But can they deliver on taste?

Chocolate Protein Sweet Roll Review

First off, these Sweet Rolls are dense, and I don’t mean dense in a hearty, filling kind of way. I mean, if you threw one at a wall, you might need to repaint.

Bottom of protein sweet roll

No amount of microwaving (the recommended 10-15 seconds) did anything to make it less brick-like.

So, if you’re hoping for the light, flaky texture of a freshly baked sweet roll, you’re in for a letdown.

The flavor is decidedly chocolate, but in a way that’s reminiscent of protein powder stirred with water and a sprinkle of sugar substitute.

It’s not bad per se, but it’s not great either. It feels like they’ve essentially repackaged their Tasty Pastries into a roll shape, but in this case, the form doesn’t follow function.

Legendary Foods Protein Sweet Roll

One criticism I had of the Tasty Pastries was their dense and chewy pastry layer. They’re still soft, but much denser than a typical pastry, that’s for sure.

When you multiply that texture by turning it into a larger roll, you end up with a product that’s tough to enjoy. The density works for the Tasty Pastries because they’re thin, but it’s simply too much for a sweet roll.

Legendary Foods Protein Sweet Roll: Final Thoughts

So, do these Protein Sweet Rolls live up to the hype? Honestly, not really.

They’ve taken the formula that worked so well with their Tasty Pastries and tried to repurpose it in a different form, and in this case, the magic didn’t carry over.

While the macro profile is impressive, the flavor and texture just can’t match up. It’s like biting into a thick protein bar masquerading as a cinnamon roll, and that’s just not what you want from a sweet roll.

I’d say stick to the Tasty Pastries if you’re looking for a protein-packed, keto-friendly treat from Legendary Foods.

As for these Protein Sweet Rolls, I’d give them a pass. They’re not awful, but they’re definitely not legendary.

Summary
Legendary Foods knocked it out of the park with their Tasty Pastry, but this Protein Sweet Roll missed the mark big time. The thick, dense nature simply does not work for a product that's supposed to be light and fluffy.
